Think about it: every bite of food that we eat somehow comes through a plant. Of course, it can be further stated that we owe our very existence to a 6-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains and the sun shines. This is truly one of the marvels of the earth and land that we are blessed to steward.
When you grow up on a farm, having a vegetable garden is just part of what you do and who you are. Steve and Nancy had their first garden the first year they were married on a small plot in downtown Nicholson, Georgia. So, for us, it just came naturally that we would have a garden when we established Cedar Ridge Farm here. So, why not make it a “little bit larger” and sell some of the extra? We were soon involved with local farmers’ markets selling produce and plants and discovered that there is a deep hunger for truly fresh, local vegetables with that home-grown touch and care.
We find growing and marketing garden-fresh vegetables in the local community very rewarding. There is something so gratifying about caring for the soil: planting a seed, seeing it sprout, watching it grow, cultivating it, and harvesting its bounty to feed ourselves, our neighbors, and our friends.
Market gardening in the piedmont of South Carolina need not be just a summer endeavor. We are fortunate to grow many crops well into the fall and winter. Seldom is our garden “empty.” Be sure to check out our Farm Blog to see what is currently growing and check out the catalog listings of what we produce and what is available.
